Color Palette

Description:
New palette was a major letdown.
Almost every option feels either flat, boring or generic.

Even after all the feedback, I feel it is still a major downgrade compared to the “legacy” palette, for the majority of classes.

4th and 3th job had amazing palettes for us to work with.

I am aware of the issues from the legacy palette. There were some classes that had incomplete palettes, such as Shinkiro, or buggy ones that caused issues with Halter Lead (in Muh own words: the “floating mounted wizard” issue).

However, I feel the updated palette is a major slap in the face of the “endgame” playerbase, that does think this is an important aspect of the game.

I won’t ask for a full rollback to the previous one, but…
Maybe we can have the old palette merged into the new one?
Or some colors variations asked by the community from the legacy one added to the new one?

I honestly don’t think the majority of the playerbase cares about the Halter Lead issue, or the 1st/2nd/some extended classes having incomplete palettes, but then, a merge would fix at least the second issue.

Why is this a good idea?
This is a huge part of Ragnarok Online, making your character look good.
This is in itself a huge part of any MMORPG for a majority of the playerbase.

What risks or downsides does it have?
Buggy Halter Lead/floating sprites.

Additional Info:
Honestly, I will just leave my old characters here, just to point out that NONE of those colors can be replicated on the current palette.

Yeah I think the biggest problem is that none of the color combination I had with the old palettes exist anymore. Sure I can find something similar but every time it ends up slightly worse.

Here’s an example with my cardinal :

old palette (1273)

new palette (1789)

other new palette (1802)

They are similar, but due to the loss of shading on the elements they feel way flatter and look like a lower resolution version.

And those are the best I could find, most choices are very very distasteful.

TLDR the new palettes lack the shine and polish of the old ones, and if we have to choose between new and old (ie we can’t have both) I don’t think it’s worth to downgrade 90% of the classes just to make shinkiro skins work.

I agree; I spent the whole day trying to match the colors as best I could, but aside from them all being very similar, there are serious issues with the mounts, which don’t really fit the current palette.

In this last image with all the mounts, I hadn’t finished adjusting the colors yet, but even when I “managed” to do so, they still turned out very strange.

I honestly assumed that the new palette was going to be in addition to the old palette. I don’t particularly care about my characters style, but I wasn’t expecting to log in today to a bunch of puke green colored characters… It would have been kinda nice to reset to default or something if we were going to entirely replace the palette. But 20/20 hindsight on that one I think.

All in all I guess I don’t really have an opinion on which palette is better.. Can we use both? Is that possible?

I don’t know what the limitations are when it comes to palette in this game, but it would be best if we could have both obviously, the old ones definitely have their niche and the new ones aren’t replacing them efficiently.

I’ve tried to find replacement for my characters and so far I’ve only found a decent replacement for 1 out of 4, and some color combinations don’t exist anymore (for example green DK skin with blood red cape).

i’m not going to pretend that all the colors in the legacy palette were perfect or had no duplicates, but i have to agree the new ones very much feel like a downgrade. the total count is higher yes, but so did the number of duplicate/super similar palettes. color bleed is so frequent; a good majority of them are either highly saturated highlighter colors and/or turned dull and muddy (RIP pastel palettes); we lost unique color combos and overall they just… simply do not look as appealing nor polished imo.

it doesn’t matter if you have 1.9k or 2k or more. how many of those are going to be filler, and how many would people feel inclined to use? i wanted to look for substitutes for my old palettes, but even looking at the charts was giving me a bit of actual eye strain perusing so much high saturation colors.

it would be nice if we could request some palettes to be added back but idk how streamlined that would be compared to just bringing back the old palettes as a whole, if possible.

i really wish something as big as major visual update like this that completely changed how our characters looked was run through the community first, with previews if this was the case, before catching a lot of us off-guard with what felt like an unwarranted change.

Just a heads up.
I will bring back the old palettes soonish, with non broken sprites (which was part of the fixes applied with new palettes). Note: this will remove official palettes and kamishi palettes again.

I also will continue refining my palette script with all the inputs and errors that were reported, also I will try to find a way to port the old palettes into it. So next update (no ETA) will be less “painful” then.

Thank you for that :folded_hands:
